StopCopy Net Additional Information

StopCopy Net is a new technology from BBI Computer Systems, which allows authorizations to be controlled from a Web server, rather than from the traditional floppy diskette.  Authorizations can be installed to and removed from various computers, using the StopCopy Net Web server as the controlling mechanism.

Remote Activated protection has been available with all StopCopy products since version 1.50a.  This type of protection allows authorizations to be distributed without an authorization diskette, by requiring the user to contact the developer for an Activation Code when installing an authorization to a computer.

The StopCopy Net technology builds upon this Remote Activation protection provided by the StopCopy Products by allowing protected software to be delivered without an authorization diskette, without requiring a human being to generate an Activation Code when a user installs an authorization.  Furthermore, StopCopy Net can increment the remaining installation counter of an authorization when it is removed from a computer.

How it all works -- from the developer's standpoint

To utilize StopCopy Net, a developer would:

  1. Use the StopCopy Net Administrator to create an authorization database for the protected application.  This database assigns a Product Code for each authorization, and controls various things about the authorization, such as the number of times the authorization can be activated.
  2. Protect the application using the standard StopCopy methods of protection, such as linking the StopCopy libraries into the application.
  3. Produce a Setup program, which could access the StopCopy Net Web server programmatically to activate the authorization.  (Please note that this is not required, as the Setup program can simply copy the files to the target computer, and the user can use his browser and our Authorization Manager utility to activate the authorization).
  4. Use Remote Activated protection to produce the authorization.   This authorization will exist as an .EKB file, which can then be duplicated and mass produced.
  5. Provide a Product Code to each user.

How it all works -- from a users standpoint

When a user receives software protected by StopCopy Net, he would:

  1. Run the Setup program for the application, which would copy all files to his hard disk or network drive.
  2. Access the StopCopy Net server (either programmatically or manually), and obtain an Activation Code for the authorization by providing a Product Code and a User Code.
